YOUTUBE FEAR VIDEOS - Tail Wagging The Dog
You know the old saying. “The tail is wagging the dog”. A more modern term, gaslighting, is the same thing. Have you let Philippine expat YouTube videos impact your retirement decisions? Have they negatively impacted your attitude? The tail is the creator who needs views. The tail is a thumbnail with a red arrow and a shocked face. The dog is you. Be the BIG DOG.
WHY FEAR TRAVELS
Your brain weighs bad news more heavily than good news. A study across 17 countries on six continents found that people were, on average, more physically aroused by negative video news than positive. People value losses on a steeper curve than gains. A study of more than 2.7 million social media posts found that content about enemies was shared about twice as often as content from the posters allies. "You could lose everything" beats "You could live well."
That’s the power of the negative and how the tail ends up wagging the dog.
YES, NEGATIVE IS REAL
Scams that target retirees are real, the skin tax is often real, and some places have more street crime than others. If you ignore the negatives, you will get hurt. It must be dealt with. However, If you focus solely on the negative, you will never make the best decisions.
A warning should give you a next step, and a way to mitigate the risk. When a video gives you only a knot in your stomach and leads you to another doom video, the tail is wagging you (the dog).
Here are some examples.
1) THE MYSTERY TITLE
"What nobody tells you, or "The truth they hide."
There are many great YouTube channels with good solutions for damn near any problem you can imagine. Pay attention to the real issues you can verify and make sure you can accept the solution. For somethings, there are no solutions, life is a balancing act. If you retire in the Philippines and are surprised by anything when you arrive, you didn’t do you homework.
The problem with the Tail waggers is that they can turn you away from what may be the perfect retirement destination for you.
The Bureau of Immigration publishes requirements. The Philippine Retirement Authority publishes its rules. The U.S. Embassy in Manila publishes guidance and the good YouTubers give you practical examples explaining how they solved the problems you’ll likely encounter. The ominous title is often a lie for clicks.
2) MANY LOSERS MAKE VIDEOS
A man who sold everything, got burned, and flew home has a story. The expat who needs money will resort to hyperbole click bait titles in an attempt to earn money.
A retiree enjoying quiet mornings and paying a fair rent has no reason to create shock content. The majority of reasonable creators have embraced YouTube as a way to stay busy and be of service.
Also, travel vlogs from tourists are a poor source of information for retirees. The “everyone is fleeing” videos are often produced by those who resort to clickbait and need money, or have failed because they drink too much, or have other problems.
Here are some facts:
As of April 30, 2026, the Philippine Retirement Authority counted 61,695 active retiree visa holders, dependents included. That is only one visa category, It tells you that tens of thousands of people live this life without making videos about it.
1) ONE STORY BECOMES LAW
YouTubers repeatedly create the same fear-mongering videos. A frozen bank account. A landlord kept a deposit. Maybe true, but one event is an event. It ONLY becomes an inevitability if you don’t do your own research, find out why things happened and then make sure you don’t make the same mistakes.
2) THE YOUTUBE FEED LOOP
Watch two scary videos and your homepage serves a dozen more. You think you are researching, but You’re really standing in an echo chamber that gets louder with every click. Decide on your questions before you search YouTube.
Searching "What are the current retiree visa requirements?" is a question.
Searching "Philippines videos" is like pulling the handle on a slot machine.
3) STALE AND OLD INFO IS STILL FED TO YOU
Remember that rules, laws, and fees change. An old video can describe a world that no longer exists and still rank at the top of the Youtube Algorithm.
4) OFTEN, THE “INFLUENCER” SELLING
Ask what the creator sells. A course, consulting, a membership, affiliate links. Selling is no crime. But a creator who earns when you are afraid has a reason to keep you afraid.
GIVE THE NEGATIVE A SEAT, NOT THE WHEEL
Security people rank threats two ways. How likely is it to happen, and how bad is it if it happens?
A scam that drains your savings is likely enough and severe enough to plan for. A dramatic story that happened once to someone you cannot identify with deserves far less of your attention. Rank the risks. Then spend your attention in that order.
THE TEN-STEP COUNTERMEASURE CHECKLIST
Decide your question before you search.
Ask who made the video and what they sell.
Check the upload date.
Find the rule at its source. (Like the citations below)
Look for the same claim from multiple unrelated sources.
Separate facts from adjectives.
Chat with people who live there, including ones who left and ones who stayed.
Rent for three to six months before you sell a house or sign anything permanent overseas.
Distinguish tourism videos from retirement videos.
Disregard most videos from the euro-trash backpackers with no life experience telling you how great, or how much something sucks. Most retirees aren’t concerned with the same things as young tourists.
SUMMARY
YouTube rewards what holds attention, and fear holds attention. Negative is real, so you can’t ignore it, but make sure that the negative is relevant to you. If you are retiring to the Philippines, You are the BIG DOG, wag your own tail
Joe out!
