Philippines Ranks Top For Retirement Abroad, Yet these Six Fears Are REal
THE RANKING
The Philippines topped the Retirement Abroad Index 2026 from Expatriate Group, an international health insurer. The index compared 20 countries. The Philippines scored 78 out of 100. Thailand scored 77. Top ranking is one thing, but you will still fail if you don’t address these six fears before you leave.
In my opinion, I believe that the philippines is the easiest place to overcome the following six fears/challenges. What do you think?
Issue ONE: THE VISA
Thailand cut its visa-free stay for most visitors to 30 days. Vietnam has no retirement visa. The Philippines has the Special Resident Retiree's Visa, run by the Philippine Retirement Authority. It is without a doubt easier to enter and stay in the Philippines; however, you need to do your own research and remember that the Increased scrutiny of those on a tourist visa in the Philippines is real. The immigration officer decides whether you enter and if your visa is renewed. These immigration policies are not laws, and they can in any country at any time
Issue TWO: BANKING
Know how your pension or Social Security will reach you. Know how you will pay bills. Keep a backup way to reach your money. There are many excellent expat videos covering this topic. Make sure you understand apps like Gcash, and Wise before you depart.
Issue THREE: COST OF LIVING
The index estimates a retired couple can live comfortably on about $988 to $1,318 a month, and less outside Manila, but I think that’s a little ambitious. Look at the link below and decide for yourself. Regardless of your budget, build a cushion for surprises. They always come.
Issue FOUR: COMMUNICATION
English is one of the official languages in the philippines, and although many speak English, don’t count on deep communication without challenges. In other countries it will be much more difficult. I recommend making a serious effort to learn the language of the country you want to call home. It will be extremely helpful for your day-to-day life, and it earns respect from the locals.
Issue FIVE: ROMANCE AND LONELINESS
The warmth in Asia is real. Kindness is a cultural habit and you will immediately feel the difference in the way you are treated compared to the west. Take your time and build platonic relationships. Introductions by people who know you are the absolute best way to meet more quality friends and eligible women. Of all the Asian countries, the Philippines is definitely the most open to age-gap relationships.
Issue SIX: HEALTHCARE
The Numbeo link below will give you great cost data. The care, price, hospital availability, etc. are vastly different in cities compared to rural areas. If you don’t have money and a plan, this single issue can leave you stranded in a foreign country with no safety net.
SUMMARY
The Philippines was ranked number one for retirement in 2026. Thailand and Vietnam are tougher on visas, and the Philippines still scrutinizes tourist visas. Policies are not laws, and they can change at any time. Face your fears about visas, banking, money, language, love, and healthcare before you move. Verify requirements with the official agencies.
Better thinking does equal a better life,
Joe
