Most Americans assume a McDonald's is a McDonald's, no matter where you find it. That assumption doesn't survive first contact with McDonald's Philippines.
THE ORIGIN STORY
McDonald's opened its first Philippine store in 1981, on Morayta Street in Manila. It wasn't a company-owned outlet dropped in from Illinois. It was a franchise partnership with Filipino businessman George T. Yang, required because of Philippine restrictions on majority foreign ownership. That local ownership is the reason the menu diverged so heavily from the US version. Yang's team didn't win Filipino customers by staying "authentically American. They won by localizing.
What’s different in the Philippines?
McSpaghetti was added in 1986. Sweet-style tomato sauce, sliced hotdogs, ground meat, and grated cheese. It is not Italian food, It’s Filipino comfort food wearing a spaghetti costume.
Chicken McDo, was added in 1987. Fried chicken served with rice as the default side, not fries. In a country where rice is the base entree for nearly every meal, this isn't a gimmick, it's the standard.
Burger McDo. Added in 1993. A value beef burger with no real US equivalent on the current menu.

Chains Dead in USA, BUT Thriving In THE PI
Shakey's Pizza was founded in Sacramento, California, in 1954 — the first franchised pizza chain in the United States. Today it's down to roughly 40 locations, almost all clustered in Southern California. Shakey's arrived in the Philippines in 1975. Today there are over 300 locations, and the company is publicly listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange. Many Filipinos assume Shakey's is a homegrown brand. It isn't. It's an American export that outlived its own homeland.
Kenny Rogers Roasters, founded in 1991 by the country singer himself, is fully extinct in the United States — the last location, in a California mall food court, closed at the end of 2011. Overseas, it's a different story. The chain still operates across the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, and other Asia-Pacific markets, now owned by a Malaysian conglomerate. A brand that America forgot is still on the menu here.
A Western brand name still carries weight overseas long after it's lost its footing at home. And whatever sank the brand domestically — financial trouble, changing tastes, bad press — usually doesn't follow it abroad. The brand gets a clean slate and a fresh audience.
WHAT THIS MEANS IF YOU'RE RELOCATING. Don't assume familiarity. A logo you recognize doesn't guarantee a menu, a flavor, or even a business history you’ll expect. Don’t skip these American icons, you may love the twists here.
